Projection and Sound Installation
_._. ___ _. _._. . ._ ._.. (CONCEAL) engages historical and contemporary uses of coded language by visually and sonically reconfiguring lines of Morse code. The words CONCEAL, PRESERVE, CENSOR, AND COMMUNE are translated into Morse code through a fiber-centered process that combines crochet and Victorian bead-rolling. A generative aspect emerges through the meshing of each line of fiber code onto itself, altering not only the translation of the code, but the resulting imagery and sound output. This process contemplates mistranslations, misconstructions, and the aftereffects of unconsciously accepting fiction as fact.

Conceal operates by enclosing its body within elaborate codes, in this case Morse code, but rendered disarmingly as knotted beads. The use of these beads evokes current nostalgic enthusiasms for interpersonal ephemera, such as friendship bracelets, while juxtaposing this with the more considered binary codes of the most system and its association with covert signalling and military communications. Concealed operates both as a visual tableau presenting us with the moving image; however, it embeds codes and meanings that are hidden to us within this presentation.
Obliquely commenting on the relationship between cinema and meaning, Conceal is a rich work that straddles the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and the moving image.
