The String in the Labyrinth
Projection (1:57)
Throughout classical literature, there is a common association between florals and femininity. This projection mapped animation draws upon this concept by using the visual of an arrangement of flowers blooming, wilting, and becoming a canvas for dye splatter to represent how life-changing the law can be on a woman's quality of life. The floral arrangement is formed around the archway of the mapped building before being overtaken by the dye-dripping government buildings appearing from above. These upside-down buildings bring a feeling of anxiety, with each new appearance increasing in size and therefore in power. The animation ends with the dye spreading to the entire surface, just as a crash of lighting strikes the building.
In order to add a textured distortion which related to the floral theme, I scanned natural dye spots on napkins that resulted from drying freshly washed blackberries, resulting in a pattern reminiscent of blemishes or even blood splatter. The floral imagery used in this project was sourced from commercial floral advertisements, old commercial photo shoots, and open source PNG sites. Images of governmental buildings were sourced from news articles and international government web pages.
This animation was included as part of a larger body of work projected onto a buttery at the 2023 Digital Graffiti Projection Mapping Festival in Alys Beach, Florida, alongside other ASH Scholars from the University of Missouri.
